What are pelagic fish?

The pelagic zone is the mid-section of the sea, away from the coast and the sea floor, which makes up the main part of the ocean. The term ‘pelagic fish’ refers to the many different species that call this area home. Some species of pelagic fish live near the coast at depths of around 200m, while we find others below the continental shelf.

Pelagic fish are highly valued as food because they contain many easily digestible proteins and essential fatty acids like DHA and EPA, as well as fat-soluble vitamins (E and D). In fact, the fat content varies hugely between, and also within, species depending on the season and fishing area. Fat content can even differ within one catch.

Pelagic fish are particularly important to the fishing industry as we can catch them at high volumes and low cost, meaning we can supply more to support global food security. This is crucial as the amount of fish we eat is continuing to increase, with fish consumption globally projected to reach 21.4 kg per capita in 2031—up from 20.5 kg per capita in 2019-2021.

Which pelagic species does North Atlantic fish for?

We fish four species of pelagic fish: herring, mackerel, horse mackerel and blue whiting.

Herring

Herring are streamlined fish with small heads, silvery iridescent sides and deep blue, metallic-hued backs. Adults grow to 20 to 38cm (8 to 15in) and their bodies are covered with large, thin, loosely attached scales. They have big mouths with small, weak teeth.

Herring are found on both sides of the North Atlantic, with the most important fishing grounds being the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the coastal waters of Britain, Norway, Iceland, and Canada. They’re very high in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and are a great source of vitamin D.

Did you know?

  • Herring are found as far down as 200m in the North Sea and along the borders of the Atlantic Ocean.
  • A single female herring produces between 20,000 and 50,000 eggs. After spawning, herring migrate to areas that are rich in plankton.
  • We’ve been eating herring since around 3000 BCE – and in Europe we’ve been salting them to keep as winter food for at least 1,000 years.

Mackerel

Mackerel are medium-sized fish. Their bodies are rounded and torpedo-shaped, with a slender, keeled tail base, a forked tail and a row of small finlets behind the dorsal and anal fins. They’re carnivorous, feeding on small fish, fish eggs, plankton, crustaceans and molluscs.

Mackerel are found in the northern part of the North Sea, and west of Scotland and Ireland. An oily fish, it’s a rich source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.

Mackerel is also a sustainable seafood choice. That’s because it has a large population, and there are lots of rules in place to make sure it’s fished responsibly.

Did you know?

  • Mackerel is known for its distinct flavour and firm texture. It’s great in everything from Nordic snacks to Mediterranean salads to Japanese sushi.
  • In January, the waters around the Shetland Islands have an abundance of mackerel, making it an important time for our fleet. As the year goes on, mackerel gradually head south.
  • Because mackerel’s so rich in omega-3 fatty acids, it’s great for brain health, and for reducing the risk of heart disease.

Horse mackerel

The term ‘horse mackerel’ actually refers to several different species – but most belong to the jack mackerel and scad family, Carangidae.

Most horse mackerel are slender with silver or greyish-blue scales, but some species are more colourful – like the green-blue Japanese horse mackerel. Horse mackerel generally have two dorsal fins and a long line of scutes (tiny, flat scales) running from their heads to their tails. Each of these bony protrusions has a sharp spine, with the size varying from species to species. 

Horse mackerel are mostly caught in the chilly waters off Scotland and Ireland, in the Gulf of Biscay and, since 1996, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Mauritania. It’s one of the most important pelagic species for freezer-trawler fleets due to its abundance, commercial value, and nutritional content, and is mostly exported to Russia, Nigeria, and Japan.

Did you know?

  • The horse mackerel’s name comes from a legend that other smaller fish would ride on its back on long journeys. While that might not be true, juvenile horse mackerel do hide (or ride) in the tentacles of jellyfish to avoid predators.
  • Female horse mackerel produce up to 140,000 eggs. And horse mackerel can live to up to 40 years old in the wild.
  • While they normally congregate in schools with other mackerel, horse mackerel will also team up with other schools of fish for safety.

Blue whiting 

The blue whiting is found in the Atlantic from Morocco to Iceland and Spitsbergen (in Norway). It’s one of two species in the genus Micromesistius in the family Gadidae, which also includes cod, haddock and pollock.

Blue whiting have long narrow bodies and silvery underbodies. They’re both predator and prey in the open ocean and help to maintain the balance of the pelagic ecosystem. And while a lot of EU blue whiting catch goes to fish-meal factories to produce feed for other animals, nearly all of ours is used for human consumption.

  • Blue whiting live in the open ocean at depths of 100 to 1000m (330 to 3300ft). They’re often found above the continental slope, mainly at depths of 150 to 400m (490 to 1310ft).
  • Female blue whiting produce between 6,000 and 150,000 eggs.
  • For most of the year, blue whiting are spread out over large areas of the ocean. But during the spawning season, they come together in large numbers to form dense schools.

Why do we need pelagic fish?

In terms of nutritional quality, pelagic fish are one of the most cost-effective foods on the planet. They’re low in cholesterol and brimming with healthy long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and nutrients like riboflavin, iron and calcium. That makes them a great source of nutrition for developing populations’ everyday diets.

Fish isn’t just an important food source for developing nations. There are 8 billion people on our planet. By 2030, the UN expects this to reach 8.5 billion, and 11 billion by 2100. And the simple fact is that we can’t feed the world without fish. It’s a vital high-protein food which has a low environmental impact when it’s managed responsibly. As the world’s population grows, so will demand for affordable fish, especially pelagic species.

That’s why almost 100% of the fish we catch is for human consumption.

How tech is transforming commercial fishing

Fishing has been a human activity for millennia, dating back to prehistoric times when early humans used primitive tools to catch fish. Among the earliest evidence of fishing is a carved bone found in Japan, dating back to between 27,000 and 29,000 BC, which illustrates a man fishing with a rod and line. This artefact, uncovered in 1957, marks a significant point in the historical development of fishing. Since then, the methods and technologies have evolved dramatically.

In the UK, fishing has historically been a prominent industry and previously ranked as one of the world’s biggest. Today, fishing enterprises are critical in ensuring food security and supporting fishing communities.

The progression of fishing methods has evolved from basic traps and nets used in nearby lakes and rivers to advanced technologies that allow for fishing in deeper ocean areas. Innovations have included the development of better and larger vessels, more sophisticated fishing gear, and enhanced preservation techniques. Significant mechanisation in the 1950s, such as the introduction of power blocks and power-driven drums for handling various nets, triggered a steady advancement in fishing technology.  

Recent tech advancements

In recent years, the commercial fishing industry has integrated several technological improvements to enhance selectivity (ensure only the target species is caught), efficiency, sustainability and, safety. Modern fishing vessels utilise various technologies:

  • Fish finders locate schools of fish and relay key data about their size, behaviour, and depth.
  • LED lights on nets that attract certain types of fish and repel unwanted species.
  • Fishing nets with panels allowing the escape of marine mammals, smaller, non-target species and juvenile fish while simultaneously retaining the targeted species.
  • Sensors and cameras fitted to nets to identify target species and to manage the quantity of catch in each haul, assuring the highest quality of the product.
  • Reliable communication systems facilitate seamless coordination with other ships and authorities to ensure crew safety and compliance with regulations.
  • Electronic navigation systems help avoid collisions and maintain accurate courses.
  • Automated fishing gear employs mechanical and hydraulic devices to refine fishing techniques, improving efficiency.
  • Monitoring and control systems track engine performance, fuel consumption, and temperature to reduce emissions and optimise resource use.
  • Safety equipment improves crew safety and supports emergency responses.
  • Data management systems aid decision-making and ensure fisheries regulations and marine conservation laws compliance.

How tech promotes sustainable fishing

At North Atlantic, we currently implement a variety of advanced technology aboard our vessels, including radar, sonar, acoustic and electro-magnetic deterrent devices (“pingers”), and weather and ocean environment monitoring equipment. We’re also exploring new tech, such as drones, to improve our ability to localise ‘marks’ of fish and help us reduce our emissions and improve efficiency, fuel use, and cost management. Satellite communication equipment helps us to review and dynamically manage fishing operations once the vessels have left harbour to assure the right volume and quality of catch to meet our customers’ requirements. In addition, we can share our catch data with scientific institutions to inform future fisheries management decision making.

We consistently scan the horizon for emerging technologies to help us further support sustainable fisheries management. Advances in sonar capabilities, underwater cameras, remote electronic monitoring equipment and computing systems all contribute to our efforts to minimise bycatch and ensure regulatory compliance.

Tech-based careers in the fishing industry

Fishing vessels increasingly rely on technology, demanding skilled workers in STEM fields. The industry offers a wide array of learning opportunities where individuals can gain specialised skills, especially as the sector already depends on highly skilled labour. As technology advances, the need for skilled marine engineers, naval architects, and experts in AI, robotics, and computer science grows. 

There is a high demand for engineering officers on large, modern vessels, which rely heavily on digital technology and automation. These roles require workers who are tech-literate yet also possess traditional maritime skills. Additionally, the operation of ships in increasingly congested waters requires highly skilled personnel to manage advanced electronic navigation, radar, sonar, and communication systems effectively.

The future is greener and cheaper

The fishing industry has and continues to evolve and adapt as new technology emerges to enable precise and responsible fishing operations. We anticipate increased automation and digitalisation, with artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms set to transform fisheries management data quality and quantity. Drones and autonomous vessels are expected to become more widespread, offering cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions for monitoring, mapping, and perhaps even transporting catches.

With the adoption of these technological innovations, the fishing industry’s future looks promising – the combination of responsible fishing practices, sustainable fisheries policy and regulation, and coherent marine management and protection can deliver improved food production opportunities. Reeling in the next generation: alternative careers in the fishing industry

The UK fishing industry is currently facing a significant recruitment challenge. A worrying trend has emerged, particularly among young people from coastal communities, who are turning their backs on careers in fishing. Data shows that 61% wouldn’t consider a career in the industry, and the number of UK fishers has fallen by 1,700 over the last decade, with a 48% decline in active fishers since 1995. However, for those willing to explore its depth, the fishing sector offers a wealth of diverse and rewarding career paths.

The fishing sector is a cornerstone of Britain’s heritage, particularly within port towns such as Hull and Grimsby, and is important for the local economies of these regions. The wider industry is also going to be vital for global food supply as the UN predicts population will reach 11 billion by 2100. As the world population increases, so does the demand for an affordable, high-protein food such as fish.

By emphasising new safer, tech-focused, and well-paid careers available today, we aim to attract young people to carry on the legacy of our country and help to feed the world, delivering high quality fish to global markets.

To help address recruitment challenges in the sector, we invest in the next generation by “growing our own”, engaging both Deck and Engineer Officer Cadets and supporting them through to formal qualification to help develop the skills required for fishing now, and into the future. 

North Atlantic Fishing Company sponsors several cadets each year to study at Fleetwood Nautical College, on a Foundation degree course in marine engineering and similar for Deck Officers. The course combines classroom theory with stints at sea so students participating in the course have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they gain in a real-world setting.

Students are eligible to join vessel crews as trainee Mates or junior engineer officers upon completion of the programme, performing a watch-keeping duty to ensure the serviceability of all equipment on board the vessel.

Historically fishing has been viewed as a dangerous and low-paid profession. However, today’s fishing industry is a complex partnership between Government, scientists, Regulators and fishing businesses .  The fishing sector offers a variety of roles that require a blend of traditional maritime skills and modern technological expertise. For example, here are just some of the career opportunities in the sector today:

Skipper: At the helm, the skipper leads the crew, skilfully navigates the sea, and manages the entire fishing operation. Required expertise includes deep knowledge of fishing techniques, navigation, and leadership skills.

Engineer: Tasked with keeping the vessel’s systems running smoothly, engineers troubleshoot and maintain mechanical and electrical systems, requiring a knack for technology and problem-solving.

Factory Manager: Working on board, the factory manager oversees the processing and packaging of seafood, ensuring quality control, hygiene standards, and production targets are met.

Maritime Conservation Officer: These officers play a critical role in protecting marine environments and maintaining sustainable fishing practices, combining knowledge in environmental laws, science, and policy.

Marine Biologist: Studying sea life and ecosystems, marine biologists in the fishing industry may focus on sustainability efforts, fishery management, or the development of new aquaculture methods.

Fisheries Observer: Appointed to monitor fishing activities, these individuals ensure adherence to regulations, reporting on compliance to promote sustainable industry practices.

To fill these roles, however, wider awareness of them is vital and we must change often outdated perceptions of the sector.

To draw new talent, we must integrate the fishing industry more closely with educational institutions. Career events and mentorship from industry professionals also play a crucial role in providing real-world insights about the field.

By partnering with educational institutions and showcasing modern, attractive career paths, the fishing industry can change perceptions and attract the workforce it critically needs.

At North Atlantic, we know how crucial these partnerships can be, in previous years we have invested in apprentices from Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) to help launch their seafaring careers. We also regularly sponsor the activities of the Hull Sea Cadets, helping provide them with an opportunity to build upon their sailing and outdoor skills and potentially inspire the next generation of maritime professionals.

However, to attract the younger generation to a fulfilling career within the fishing sector, it’s vital to cast a wide net to showcase the lucrative opportunities available. With the right education, training, and exposure, we can spark a renewed interest in maritime careers and ensure the sustainability and vibrancy of this essential industry for years to come.

Evolution of safety in the UK fishing industry

The British fishing industry plays a significant role in national and global assuring food security and is part of the tradition and tapestry of our nation. For centuries fishing has been vital to coastal communities, providing employment and supporting local economies. However, the industry faces increasing challenges due to factors such as increasingly congested and contested seas, increased regulation, skills shortages, and, of course, the demands of operating at sea.

There is a popular narrative that fishing is one of the most hazardous occupations. This perception does little to acknowledge the significant work that has been achieved and is still ongoing to improve the safety of fishers.  There will always be dangers associated with working at sea none more so than the vagaries of the weather which can still catch us out, but other hazards can be identified, and the risks managed so that we can operate as safely as possible to make sure that our dedicated and skilled crew can return safely home after each trip.

History of safety in the industry

In the early years of fishing, safety regulations were minimal, and fishermen had to rely on their own experience, skills, and equipment to protect themselves. As such, accidents and deaths were common.

In 1952, the UK government introduced the ‘Safety at Sea Act’ to establish safety provisions for fishing vessels, this included regulations for life-saving appliances, navigation lights, communication equipment, and more.

However, in 1968 a series of incidents that occurred, known as the ‘Hull Triple Trawler Tragedy’, resulted in the loss of three fishing vessels from the port of Hull and claimed the lives of 58 fishermen. Tragic events which highlighted several safety concerns in the UK fishing industry, that still needed to be addressed.

It was discovered that outdated and inadequate safety equipment, insufficient training, and the pressure to maximise catches were contributing factors to the accidents. The ‘Hull Triple Trawler Tragedy’ also sparked public outrage and demands for improved safety regulations and safer practices, which prompted significant regulatory changes and improvements to safety standards.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, continued improvements were made to the fishing industry to further enhance crew safety. The establishment of the ‘Marine Accident Investigation Branch’ in 1989 aimed to investigate accidents and provide recommendations for preventing future incidents. This was followed by the introduction of the ‘Fishing Vessel (Safety Provisions and Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations in 1998’, which sought to improve safety standards and ensure the use of adequate safety equipment.

How we keep our employees safe at NAFCO

At North Atlantic, the safety and well-being of our people is our first priority. We always work to ensure that we have effective training, certification, risk assessment, safe systems of work, and PPE to ensure we are providing a safe working environment.

In 2020/2021 we started implementing a new safety management system, which is based on the International Safety Management (ISM) standard. The processes on board as well as the rules and procedures are recorded in a manual, the contents of which are discussed with the ship’s officers.

Based on a baseline measurement, it is determined which common procedures on the board the vessel differ from the procedures as described in the safety management system. After several trips, compliance onboard with the safety management system is assessed – our goal is to have assessments twice a year involving both the ship’s officers and crew members.

As well as this, all our crew members have their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and perform frequent safety drills. We monitor that PPE for our seafarers meets the safety requirements set and that the PPE is used and is replaced in good time. In 2021, a new type of helmet was introduced, this innovative helmet has a better fit, is lighter, and has several ventilation holes so that it is comfortable even in hot weather – above all it offers high-level protection.

At North Atlantic, we are continuously working to ensure the safety of our people by implementing the latest technology, providing training, and keeping up with changing laws and regulations relating to safety.

Future of safety in the industry

The UK fishing industry has continued to evolve and progress towards a safer working environment. In recent decades, there has been a greater emphasis on training and education for fishermen regarding safety practices, emergency response, and survival techniques, making it far safer.

Although risks persist, significant steps have been taken to protect the well-being of fishermen and vastly reduce the number of accidents and fatalities in this demanding industry.

The facts about pelagic fishing

Alarmist and inaccurate information regarding the culture and practice of pelagic fishing operations based on unevidenced assertions is unhelpful and misleading. At North Atlantic Fishing Company, we source food from the sea, to feed people across the world, and we make significant investments to ensure we do this selectively and sustainably to limit our impact on the marine environment.

North Atlantic operates within a highly regulated marine based food production system that provides an affordable protein source with significant health benefits for human consumption.

The Facts:

  1. We conduct environmentally friendly fishing practices

Pelagic vessels cause no damage to seabed habitats, flora, and fauna. They use a mid-water trawl, which has no contact with the seabed. Regulators assess the impact of all types of fishing gear on the sensitive seabed features of marine protected areas. If the gear has an impact, it’s not permitted for use.  Further, in deriving scientifically based quota Total Allowable Catches (TACs) and quota allocations, the environmental impact of fishing is factored into the deliberations.

  1. We only fish where we are permitted

Our vessels only fish where they are permitted to do so. If there is risk that our operations will hazard the protected features of an area or introduce risk to the balance of the marine ecosystem, we will not be able to fish there.

Pelagic fishing is managed on the basis of a maximum sustainable yield per pelagic stock. The level of Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and resulting quotas are based on scientific researchto produce evidence to underpin the advice given to policy makers.  They  take account of the needs of other marine species and the ecosystem services provided by pelagic fish. The size of the vessel we use to catch the fish reflects operating efficiencies and has no bearing on marine environment impact.  Once we have caught our quota of fish, we stop fishing.

  1. Low carbon footprint

Wild-caught pelagic fish has the lowest animal protein carbon footprint, requiring no artificial feeding or freshwater supplies, while pelagic and demersal trawling are extremely energy efficient.

If we swapped the current amount of fish we eat for meat, we would need more than 22 times the area currently taken up by the world’s rainforests for animal grazing – for every kg of beef, farmers use 6.5kg of grain and over 13,000 litres of water. That is almost a 10x larger footprint than pelagic freezer-trawler fishing!

  1. We fish responsibility and contribute to the sustainable management of pelagic species

Pelagic species such as herring, mackerel, blue whiting, and horse mackerel are wild caught, highly migratory and swim in large, dense shoals of individual species. This means that the stocks we fish are seasonally abundant in certain places, in large quantities, and at high concentrations. We use this pattern of behaviour to catch fish in controlled quantities, at the optimum time and place, over a relatively short period to ensure the quality of the catch.  We closely monitor each individual catch of fish and capture data that is shared with fisheries scientists to enable them to assess stock size and composition to inform their advice on sustainable practices.

  1. We invest in sustainable fishing technologies

We invest in state-of-the-art technology to make our fishing compliant and selective. Nets are designed to let juvenile fish escape, ensuring they can go on to reproduce and contribute to the future sustainability of the stock. Acoustic deterrent devices dissuade marine mammals from approaching the nets. Electromagnetic deterrent devices have the same effect on shark species.  We use cameras to identify the catch before the net is deployed and the latest sonar technology enables us to only target the quantity of fish we need.  Electronic logbooks report our catches back to the authorities every 24 hours. CCTV cameras, once fitted in 2024, will contribute to scientific data collection and provide evidence of compliant operations.

It is so important that as an industry we come together to help inform and educate the wider public about our sustainable and responsible fishing operations.  This will help to balance the debate and combat the spread of misinformation which is detrimental to the professionals that make it their livelihoods and may introduce food security risks to the millions of people globally who depend on fish as their main source of protein.

Exploring the varied job roles and opportunities in the fishing industry

Fishing is a challenging but rewarding career. Both the seafood and fishing sectors are cornerstones of the UK’s national heritage – contributing significantly to food security and economic growth. But the last decade has unfortunately seen the industry’s workforce decline. The total number of workers has fallen by 1,700, mainly due to an ageing workforce and limited appeal to younger people.

A fundamental key to securing the future of the UK fishing industry is education – particularly younger generations – on the opportunities a career in the fishing sector can offer and to equip them with the skills to thrive within the industry. Despite its declining workforce, the seafood industry is still evolving – and quickly. The technical expertise of the country’s fishing sector, as with other maritime pursuits, depends heavily on highly skilled labour, spanning across engineering, science, maths, among other skills. Many people are not aware of the vast range of roles available.

To help show the variety of careers available we have outlined the key job roles on board a commercial fishing vessel and what they entail.

Skipper:

The skipper is the captain of the vessel and is responsible for the safety, navigation, and fishing operations of the trawler. The skipper also manages the crew and communicates with the shore-based management and authorities. The skipper needs to have a valid certificate of competency and experience in fishing and seamanship.

First Mate:

The mate is the second-in-command of the vessel and assists the skipper in all aspects of the trawler’s operations. The mate also supervises the deck crew and ensures that the fishing gear and equipment are in good condition. The mate needs to have a valid certificate of competency and experience in fishing and seamanship.

Second Mate:

The second mate is third in command (or on some ocean liners, fourth) and is usually the ship’s navigator. They assist the Skipper and First Mate in navigating the ship, maintain watchkeeping duties, and use navigational equipment. Safety is also a top priority, involving the upkeep of safety equipment, overseeing deck operations, and responding to emergencies.

Engineer:

Engineers oversee the maintenance and repair of the trawler’s engine, machinery, and electrical systems. Engineers also monitor the fuel consumption, refrigeration, and water supply of the vessel. The engineer needs to have a valid certificate of competency and experience in marine engineering.

Boatswain (Bo’sun)

Boatswains organise the crew on deck and at the fishing hold to carry out the direction of the Skipper and/or First Mate. The Bo’sun is the leader of operations on deck and coordinates the maintenance, assembly, repair and deployment of fishing gear while ensuring the safety of all on deck and assuring that hygiene standards are met.

Factory Manager:

The factory manager oversees the sorting, grading, processing and freezing of fish on board. The factory manager also ensures that quality standards, hygiene regulations, and production targets are met. The factory manager needs to have a valid certificate of competency and experience in fish processing and management.

Factory Worker:

Factory workers perform various tasks related to the processing and freezing of fish, such as sorting, grading, filleting, packing, labelling, and storing. The factory worker also operates the machinery and equipment used in the factory.

Deckhand:

The deckhand assists in the fishing operations of the trawler, such as setting, hauling, and mending the nets, lines, or pots. The deckhand also handles the catch, cleans the deck, and helps with other duties as assigned by the skipper or mate. The deckhand needs to have basic skills in fishing and seamanship.

Whilst this is a snapshot of roles onboard a pelagic freezer trawler like ours, the career opportunities within the fishing industry are vast, from crew members on fishing vessels, to fish processors, fishery managers, marine biologists, engineers, and more. This level of diversity allows individuals to find a job that aligns with their skills, interests, and career goals.

Fishing also allows for additional benefits that appeal to those looking for a career away from a traditional on shore schedule. Sea Cadets make a splash at Welton Waters and Tall Ships Youth Trust

We have a long-standing relationship with the Sea Cadets and this year we were pleased to support the Hull Sea Cadets again, sponsoring their annual trip to Welton Waters, as well as the Tall Ships Youth Trust sailing challenge.

The annual trip to Welton Waters is a four-day camping and sailing trip that allows Sea Cadets to practice their sailing skills by day and their camping skills by night. This year a cohort of 30 Cadets – from 10 to 16 years old – took part.

The trip allows the Cadets to take part in a range of activities including, sailing, wind surfing, paddle boarding and rowing, and build up their practical boating hours which are needed to secure various achievements, like the water borne qualification. We hope that by supporting initiatives such as this, we can help to inspire the next generation of mariners from a region that has historic links with the sea and seafaring.  We currently have six cadets in training with the Company and we are looking to help others who see their future career at sea.

This year, the weather was difficult due to an unusual amount of rain and wind, however the Cadets’ spirits remained high, and they got a lot out of the trip. It has already been booked in for next year – we can’t wait!

Sally Green, Commanding Officer of the Hull Sea Cadets, said:

“I have been with the Sea Cadets since 2007 and have led the Hull Cadets since 2018 when I took over as Commanding Officer. We have been running this trip for three years and we all volunteer our time, but without the sponsorship from North Atlantic Fishing Company it would not be possible.

“It was a difficult period during and post pandemic and there isn’t as much money to support these kinds of activities, so it is very important and means a lot to the kids that attend. Some don’t get the opportunity to get out on the water, so this trip offers them the chance to learn new skills and meet new people. Welton Waters has some amazing instructors, giving the cadets an opportunity to be around professionals, learning and building upon their sailing and practical skills.”

Ollie Reid, Sea Cadet, aged 15 said:

“This year’s trip has been fantastic! I have been able to build up my boating hours and even managed to get my Competent Crew and Powerboat level 2 qualifications. We have been involved in various activities during the trip including kayaking and paddleboarding as well as playing games in the water.

“Being in the Sea Cadets opens up opportunities that not many other people get. I am still considering my options about my future career, but I have always wanted to be in the Navy as that is what all of my family has done.

“As one of the older Cadets I have been helping the younger ones get their qualifications and helping with the day-to-day tasks. I will definitely be back next year to make some more brilliant memories.”

Celen Ozkan, Sea Cadet, aged 14 said:

“During the week we have done a little bit of everything, campcraft, power boating and lots of team building activities. We have also all managed to get our boating hours up to help towards our qualifications.

“It has been very wet, but we have all got a lot closer as a group, and on an evening we all sit round the campfire and cook our dinner. I have been every year and it is always a great week – I will be back next year. I am also going to the Tall Ships Youth Trust sailing trip; I am very excited!”

Following the Welton Waters trip, a group of the older Cadets took the opportunity to be involved in the annual Tall Ships Youth Trust yacht Challenger 3 trip. The Cadets embarked on a five-night residential voyage, setting sail from Portsmouth to Poole Bay,  onto Cowes, Lymington and Osborne Bay before heading back to end the trip at Portsmouth. It gave them some practical skills coupled with theory work alongside the Skippers.

The Tall Ships Youth Trust, formerly the Sail Training Association, is a registered charity founded in 1956 and dedicated to the personal development of young people aged 12 to 25 through the crewing of its fleet of vessels. We sponsor this trip annually, as part of our ambitions to support the local fishing communities and to inspire the next generation of fisher people.

The People’s Fish Project: Exploring the rich fishing history of Hull

North Atlantic Fishing Company, alongside Hull Maritime Community, Hull City Council, Hull Culture & Leisure, and The Lottery Heritage Fund have provided support to The People’s Fish Project – a photography exhibition recognising and celebrating the long and illustrious heritage of Hull fisher folk. Photographers Nigel Walker, Carmina Ripolles, Julie Shakesby, Rob Bentley and, David Drasdo – collectively known as The People – wanted to showcase Hull’s rich fishing history, and the people involved in it.

Hull’s fishing industry began in the 12th century. Its strategic location on the east coast of England made it a favourable port for fishing vessels. Fishermen were drawn to the area because of its proximity to productive fishing locations in the North Sea.

The industry grew in the 18th and 19th centuries due to the advancement of fishing techniques and larger, more advanced fishing vessels. Hull emerged as a significant fishing port, and the industry was crucial to the local economy.

After the First World war, Hessle Road became one of the main roads in the city thanks to the booming industry and lucrative career opportunities, and for generations, Hull’s fishing families lived, shopped, and socialised here, powering the local economy. There was a strong sense of community during this time, and the street was bustling. The 1960s and 70s however, saw a lot of people move from Hessle Road and many of the houses were levelled to make way for redevelopment.

By 1976, Iceland defeated Britain following a series of disputes over the extension of fishing limits, known as the Cod Wars. As a result, Hull’s distant-water trawling fleet was forced to leave its traditional hunting grounds. Combined with rising oil prices and changes in global fishing policy, the impact of earlier overfishing and the UK’s entry into the Common Market, this move brought crisis, contraction, and the decline of the city’s fishing industry.

In 1970, Hull landed 197,000 tonnes of fish, but by 1981 that figure had fallen to only 15,000 tonnes, according to the Sea Fisheries Statistical Table. The legacy of those industries still lives on in the memorial plaques to fishermen lost at sea and in various murals celebrating seafaring.

In local memory, it is recalled as a time of unemployment, loss, and rapid change. But there are also stories of resilience – fishing for mackerel off the Cornish coast, working in the developing North Sea gas and oil sector and, voyages worldwide to fish for other nations or to survey the beds of more distant seas.

Nearly 50 years on from the Cod Wars, distant-water trawling remains with us as part of the history and heritage of the city.

North Atlantic Fishing Company has long-standing ties with Hull. It is the home port of our vessels; we employ most of our fishermen from the area, and we are increasing our landings of fish into the region to continue our support of the local economy. Sponsoring this project is another way to demonstrate our commitment to the local people that were the backbone of the British fishing industry for such a long period of history.  

The exhibition is being held at the Hull Independent Photography Gallery until the end of August 2023 and has received an excellent reception so far, including from those featured in the photographs and their families.

Our response to MCS report on sustainability of mackerel

A recent assessment from the Marine Conservation Society stating that mackerel is no longer a sustainable choice has raised concerns among the fishing community and environmentalists. At North Atlantic Fishing Company, we understand that the sustainability of seafood is a critical issue; we take this matter seriously and are committed to responsible and sustainable fishing practices.

We are dedicated to ensuring that our operations are environmentally friendly, and we prioritise the health of the oceans and the species within them. We acknowledge that the mackerel population in the Northeast Atlantic (NEA) has been declining, and it is essential that we take steps to protect this valuable resource.

Although Coastal States, including the UK, EU, NO, FI, IS, and GR, have yet to agree on a mackerel-sharing agreement, we remain committed to operating within the environmental limits of the NEA Mackerel stock. We will continue to fish responsibly and sustainably within the allocated quota recommended by scientists and set by the UK Government fisheries managers. We aim to ensure the long-term sustainability of the mackerel stock while supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities that depend on it.

Other nations’ scientists and political leadership must also prioritise sustainable fishing practices and we look to them to operate within the environment limits of the NEA Mackerel stock to assure its long-term sustainability. Cooperation and collaboration between countries and fishing industries are essential to achieve this goal.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has published their most recent advice for various pelagic fish. The recommendation is a reduction in the total allowable catch (TAC) for the Herring fishery for next year to assure the sustainability of the stock, whilst Mackerel advice recommends a slight decrease on last year’s figures of -2%.  The Blue Whiting stock has experienced significant recruitment and ICES recommend up to an 81% increase in available stock for 2023. The advice for Horse Mackerel catches is less optimistic with a zero TAC being recommended for the Western stock.

The ICES advice will now be considered with other factors to balance scientific recommendations with commercial viability to derive final TACs for 2023 to assure sustainable and responsible fishing practice.  North Atlantic Fishing Company will adhere precisely to the final outputs to play our part in making the UK fishing industry one of the world’s best-managed and most regulated to safeguard fish stocks for future generations.

Supporting global food supply

Although there has been a reduction in the total allowable catch, this helps to nurture the stocks while still providing essential protein for human consumption.

There 7.9 billion people in the world, by 2030 the UN expects this to reach 8.5 billion and by 2100 there will be 11 billion people on the planet. As the world population grows, so does the demand for affordable, high-protein food.

Increasing fish consumption among developing populations can add a nutritionally valuable component to their everyday diet. Pelagic fish are among the most cost-effective foods available they are also low in cholesterol, brimming with healthy long chain omega-3 fatty acids and nutrients like riboflavin, iron and calcium.

We cannot feed the world without fish, a high-protein food with a low environmental impact when resourced and managed responsibly. We will continue our work to deliver sustainably sourced pelagic fish to customers throughout the world.

A greener solution

All food production produces CO2 emissions, and the Government is urging food producers to minimise theirs on the road to UK net-zero by 2050.

Wild-caught pelagic fish has the lowest animal protein carbon footprint, requiring no artificial feeding or freshwater supplies, while pelagic trawling is relatively energy-efficient when compared with other fishing and food production techniques.  Our vessels make longer and therefore fewer trips per year during which we minimise CO2 emissions through economical use of engines, the use of ‘clean’ marine fuels and investment in in latest freezing technology using low impact gasses.

On-board processing is highly efficient, meaning our vessels can be at sea longer than vessels that do not freeze their catch at sea. By staying on the fishing grounds for longer periods we optimise fuel usage during our trips and catch our quotas in a highly efficient manner.

Pelagic vessels have among the lowest bycatch levels of any other vessel – predicted to be less than 1%, our mid-water nets never touch the seabed so do not interfere with seabed habitats and the marine creatures that live there, while catches are always a single species from a single stock, making NAFC vessels amongst the world’s most ecologically friendly.
